David Burke on Exhibit
Closes on Sunday, October 15, 2006

"My paintings are influenced by a place, a time, a thought, a rhythm, a beat. Thick pours of resin, gel and acrylic paints build a 3-dimensional terrain of pools, puddles, and windows. These surfaces create intimate spaces that can be entered and explored by the eye of the viewer. Reflections on the surface both seduce and repel the body and in some instances the viewer must pierce his or her own reflection in order to access the interior of the painting. I think about intimate spaces shared by friends and family, lovers and even strangers…spaces where interactions both comfortable and uncomfortable take place.

"The process of pouring and painting, covering and re-discovering, is integral to these works. There are often moments of loss followed by the discovery of something that is both new and familiar. These paintings are efforts to find my own sense of balance within a complex and sometimes disorienting reality.   – David Burke

Organic themes converge with industrial medias in David Burke’s series of paintings now on display at the Castro Valley Arts Center. His subjects bounce from cellular biology to amoeba like forms and on to the reflected image of the viewer. Burke juxtaposes these corporal images with high gloss resins and rich flashe paint. His color palate derives from Roman architecture often incorporating creamy hues while still jolting the viewer with neon oranges and blacks. His paintings are deceptively beautiful, once viewed new layers slowly reveal themselves. Burke also exhibits his dynamic suite of portraits that transcend traditional portrait imagery.  David Burke’s solo show: Pools, Puddles, Skins & Swings is on display now in the exhibition hall at the Castro Valley Art Center. The closing reception open to the public is Sunday, October 15th 2006 from 2 to 4 pm. To find out more about David Burke’s work please see www.dburke.org.
